Matt Embree and Kevin Ross are expected to square off in a re-match at Lion Fight 13 on February 7, 2014 in Las Vegas. Sources close to both fighters and the promotion have confirmed that both fighters have signed on for the fight. No official announcement has been made yet by Lion Fight.

Embree and Ross previously fought at Lion Fight 10 this past July. Embree won the first encounter by unanimous decision after a hard fought five round fight. Since their first encounter Embree has gone 1-1 with his loss coming to Sean Kearney and Ross 0-1 with his loss coming to Tetsuya Yamato.

Simon Marcus will end his year in Argentina taking on Damian Bujan at Ultra Elite Fighters: Marcus vs. Bujan. The world’s number one light heavyweight will try to avoid tasting defeat for the first time as a pro and end another impressive year. Simon was kind enough to take time to answer a few questions about his upcoming fight with Damian, the aftermath of his fight in Vegas earlier and what he has coming up in 2014.

MTA: Simon you will end the year fighting in Argentina against Damian Bujan. Is it typical business in the gym for you this time around or is something being done differently?

Simon: I’m training for this fight as I do typically. My body is in great condition and I been working on some areas I felt I could improve on.

MTA: How familiar are you with Damian and what are your thoughts on him as an opponent?

Simon: I didn't know much about him until I was offered to fight him. Damian is a fighter with Muay Thai style strong body and hard kicks. But this makes this match up more exciting for me because we will see who has a stronger and better Muay Thai skill.

MTA: You will be in his backyard, which is something you do a lot. Do you ever worry about you having to be more dominant in your performance because of the judges and any type of bias?

Simon: Yes, I know when you fight in someone’s hometown the judges ect. will be in their favor so I always to try to completely dominate the fight and go for the KO.

MTA: Your nickname is Bad Bwoy and recently it seems you have been living up to the moniker, the post fight interview at Push Kick and the backstage scuffle and most recently the altercation at the weigh ins in China. Any reason for this?

Simon: I think often my presence may intimidate my opponents and this can lead to them doing thing out of their character which I don’t stand for. We are all fighters and sometimes fighters may clash in or outside the ring. Point blank if you get in my face I’m gonna put you in check.

MTA: It has been a few months now since the infamous Chidi fight, looking back on it now have your feelings about anything changed?

Simon: Yes, The only that has changed is the increased disgust I feel for Chidi every time I watch this fight. The only word to describe his ringmanship is pathetic and that is why I called him that after the fight. Some people have been asking if there will be a rematch but I personally do not recognize him as a fighter in anyway. Unless he is will to bring his big brother to help him I have no interest in fighting someone who bends over and has no interest to fight.

MTA: Outside the ring how have things been going, your family is growing and you are gaining more popularity with each fight?

Simon: My life is blessed I get to travel the world doing what I love to do. I have been given the greatest gift of all, two beautiful children Zion and Zaniah. Honestly I wouldn’t change a thing and I will continue working to reach higher levels in all that I desire.

MTA: Is your 2014 already being planned and if so how is that looking?

Simon: Yes, so far I have 3 or 4 fights lined up in the new year. 2014 will be a even bigger year for me than this one and I will continue to show the world and the Muay Thai community that I am the undisputed best fighter in my class.

MTA: Any predictions for the fight with Damian?

Simon: I predict I will win via KO.

MTA: Best of luck to you Simon, any words for your supporters?

Simon: I want to thank all the Bad Bwoy fans that have supported me and sent me so much positive energy over the last year. I want to thank all my family in Florida and across America that big me up to the fullest. And I want everybody who watches me fight to be inspired to go for their dream head on and never back down from and challenges in the way. Love, Respect, Believe.

Ultra Elite Fighters V: Argentina vs. The World took place last night in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the main event Simon Marcus took on Argentina's Damian Bujan. Heading into the bout Argentina had taken a 4-0 lead against the world and was looking for the clean sweep.

Marcus took control of the bout early in round one as he stalked Bujan around the ring looking to engage in the clinch. The referee was quick to break up the clinch which resulted in Marcus having to use his hands more. Round two was probably Bujan's best round as he and Marcus had some nice exchanges on the feet, but Marcus still seemed to get the better of the exchanges. In round three Marcus went to work with his elbows and knees to the body in the brief clinches that were allowed by the referee. Bujan worked leg kicks and leading into round four it seemed that those leg kicks were having an effect on Marcus, but that didn't prevent him from continuing to deliver solid elbows and knees as well as out muscling Bujan in the clinch. In the final round both fighters were clinching against the ropes when they flipped over and Marcus landed on the ring apron while Bujan fell all the way to the floor. The doctors quickly rushed in to take a look at Bujan and after a few minutes Bujan showed some true heart as he stepped into the ring looking to finish the fight. Bujan attempted to get more aggressive sensing it was his final chance to try and win, but Marcus met him with a counter attack with each attempt to press the action. In the end despite the gritty performance by Bujan the judges awarded Marcus a surprising split decision, that should have been unanimous. With the win Marcus keeps a zero in the loss column and ends another impressive year.

In other action Luciano Vazquez scored an impressive knockout with a left hook to the body of Somwan. Vazquz and Somwan had a pretty even first round, but in the second Vazquez began to find his range with his punches. He set up the body shot with a left and right to the head before delivering the fight ending left hook to Somwan's body.

Results:
Simon Marcus def. Damian Bujan via Split Decision
Luciano Vazquez def. Somwan via KO (Body Punch) in Rd. 2
Damian Segovia def. Juanma Chacon via Unanimous Decision
Martin Velasco def. Pradchaw Yongyut via KO in Rd. 3

Joseph Valtellini talks upcoming Glory 13 welterweight tournament

In sports all the greats have arriving moments. The one moment that in the present anyone who didn’t think someone was the real deal sits back and says to themselves “Wow, that guy is good”. It is the same moment that when you are old and complaining to your grand kids about how the athletes back in your day were much better, you use as an example to start the description of a particular athlete that you consider a great.

In basketball Michael Jordan arrived with his 63 points in game two of the opening round in the 1985-1986 playoffs against one of the best Boston Celtics teams ever assembled. It was the first time Jordan ever scored over 50 points in a game but it wasn’t the last. In football Joe Montana had his arrival in 1981 when the San Francisco 49ers met the heavily favored Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game. Montana had already led three fourth quarter comebacks in his career, but none were of the magnitudes of the one he led against the Cowboys that year to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

This weekend fans of Kickboxing could potentially witness that moment of arrival for Joseph Valtellini. The man known as "Bazooka" has already made a splash on the international kickboxing circuit. Since Joining Glory in 2013 he has defeated veterans Murat Direkci and Karim Ghajji as well as Road to Glory tournament winner Francois Ambang, all by (T)KO. Valtellini will look to fight his way through a 4-man tournament at Glory 13 in Japan. If he can manage to do that, when it is over he will be at the top of the Glory welterweight mountain.

Valtellini took time out of his busy preparation schedule to answer a few questions for Muay Thai Authority, enjoy.

MTA: Huge year for you so far Joseph and next up is the Glory welterweight tournament, how are you feeling coming into this event?

Joseph: I feel amazing. I have a huge opportunity ahead of me that I've wanted for a long time. When I first started kickboxing, I always wanted to fight in Japan. It's an exciting time in my career and it's my chance to become the top welterweight in Glory and world.

MTA: You cut teeth fighting in tournaments in your amateur career but in the last few years since turning pro you have not fought in one. How do you feel about two fights in one night?

Joseph: Tournaments are difficult to train and prepare for. You have to be prepared to peak twice in one night. My coaches have prepared me mentally and physically for it. There are also many factors you can't plan for. It's important to get out of the first bout with as little injuries as possible. It also comes down to heart and how bad you want it.

MTA: Your first fight in the tournament is against Raymond Daniels. Are you familiar with him and if so what do you think?

Joseph: Before he signed with Glory I had never seen or heard of him. He is unorthodox and uses his point Karate style to his advantage. He fought on the same card as me in Chicago, so I was able to see his style and prepare for it during this camp.

MTA: A lot of people have different theories on how to fight in a tournament, some believe you come out looking to finish fast while other says you don't go all out and save your energy and try to avoid any real damage. What is your thought on how tournaments should addressed?

Joseph: I have seen many fighters look past their first fight and take it too lightly. I have also seen fighters give it their all and get injured. I believe it's important to just let the fight happen. To me it is about using the techniques my team and I have prepared, and just be myself in the ring.

MTA: You continue to impress people with every performance. We have people talk to us about fights all the time but since you started putting your stamp on Glory. You have to be the most talked about fighter, we constantly have people bring you up in conversation saying things like “You know who I like watching, that Joseph Valtellini", have you noticed the changes in popularity?

Joseph: That is amazing to hear. I’m happy to be an athlete that people are starting to follow and support. This is the most exciting sport in the world. I really want to get Glory and kickboxing to surpass the popularity of MMA in North America. Every time I’m in the ring, I give it my all, and try to make the fight as exciting as possible. I really do appreciate all the support that people have shown me from all over the world.

MTA: Are you worried about acclimating to the time differences in Japan, that maybe your body won't be used to it and it might affect you come fight time. If so do you have a plan to avoid that?

Joseph: Tokyo will be a 14 hour time difference, but I'm not too concerned about it. I will be going a few days earlier than usual. I will be landing in Tokyo Monday, so I will have lots of time to adjust.

MTA: You are normally not the type of guy to call anyone out or any such thing like that, but you told Nieky Holzken you are coming for his number one spot. What prompted that?

Joseph: I really didn’t call out Nieky directly. It was more about my motivation and drive to take over the #1 spot. I want to be the #1 Kickboxer in the world and anyone standing in the way of that is standing in the way of my dreams. Like I said in my pre fight interview, it’s nothing personal, just business.

MTA: In your ideal situation do you want to face Nieky in the tournament final or does that just not matter to you?

Joseph:
My goal is to win the tournament. There is a lot on the line. The winner takes home $150,000 as well as the Glory Welterweight belt. Whether I fight Nieky in the finals or not, I’m sure we will meet down the road.

Glory 13 Results and Recap

The Glory welterweight tournament took place today in Tokyo, Japan at Glory 13 and it did not disappoint. Going in many were expecting to see Nieky Holzken vs. Joseph Valtellini in the tournament final and that is exactly how things played out. Holzken won a unanimous decision over Karapet Karapetyan in the semi-finals, knocking Karapetyan down twice in the fight. Valtellini scored a third round knockout of Raymond Daniels to reserve his spot in the finals. After battering Daniels’s legs with low kicks throughout the fight a stiff leg kick in the third round had Daniels reeling and when Valtellini backed him into the ropes instead of going low he went high and scored the knockout.

In the tournament final it was all fireworks. Neither Holzken nor Valtellini wanted to give up an inch and both continuously delivered power packed punches and kicks all while still keeping great technique intact. Holzken seemed to take the lead in the first round of the fight being a bit more accurate and active but Valtellini came storming back in the second round. It could easily have been one round a piece on the judge’s score cards going into the third and final round. Both fighters came out letting their fist and feet fly in the third round. Holzken connected with a shot to body that had Valtellini hurt but he refused to go down. Valtellini continued to fire back at Holzken despite being in trouble. As the fight entered the final minute you could sense both men knew exactly everything that was on the line as they both continued to sling heavy leather. In a hectic exchange Holzken landed an overhand right that sent Valtellini crashing down to the canvas face first with only five seconds remaining in the fight. Valtellini was able to work his way back up to his feet before the ten count but the referee stopped the fight. It seemed that the referee could have let Valtellini try and make it to a decision, but in the end Holzken walked away the winner by (T)KO and with the $100,000 grand prize.

Peter Aerts and Glory heavyweight tournament winner Rico Verhoeven met in a super fight that would be Aerts last fight in Japan. It was a close fight as both men had their moments; the best way to describe this fight was a slugfest. In the end Verhoeven took home a split decision win over Aerts in a fight that could have gone either way.

In other action Daniel Ghita made quick work of Errol Zimmerman by knocking him out in just 35 seconds with a left hook and Makoko Uehara edged out Dustin Jacoby by split decision.

The Thai Fight 2013 Finals took place this past weekend in Thailand and the 154lb and 147lb tournament winners were crowned. Things went as expected as Yodsanklai Fairtex won the 154lb tournament and Fahmongkol Sor . Jor . Danrayong won the 147lb tournament.

Yodsanklai made it look easy agaisnt Expedito Valin. He knocked Valin down a total of three times. From the start of the fight Valin offered little offense as Yodsanklai walked through anything that was thrown at him as he stalked Valin. The first knock down came from an uppercut in the first round. Valin survived the round but in the second round things continued much like in the first. Yodsanklai knocked Valin down with a right punch and after Valin recovered Yodsanklai continued on the attack eventually connecting with another right that put Valin's lights out for good. With the win Yodsanklai has now won his last ten fights with seven of them being (T)KO's.

Ruslan Kushnirenko put up a worthy effort against Fahmongkol but in the end the Thai was just to skilled. Fahmongkol was simply a step ahead of Kushnirenko the entire fight. In the second round a perfectly executed left knee faint followed up by a right knee to the body spelled the end for Kushnirenko as he hit the canvas and could not beat the referee's count. It was a great display of technique by Fahmongkol.

Glory 13 took place this past weekend and it lived up to expectations. The welterweight tournament finals delivered nothing but action packed fights and the finale between tournament winner Nieky Holzken and Joseph Valtellini was nothing but amazing.

We also got to see the retirement of Peter Aerts as he put up a worthy effort against Rico Verhoeven, eventually dropping a split decision to the younger fighter. Daniel Ghita also gave fans a brutal knockout over Errol Zimmerman with a vicious left hook.

It's time for us to play matchmaker again and here we list some fights we feel would be great bouts for some the winners at Glory 13 and some of the tournament competitors.

Nieky Holzken vs. Marc De Bonte
Holzken vs. De Bonte was originally set for the Glory 13 welterweight tournament before De Bonte had to withdraw from the tournament. There is no reason for this fight not to take place now, especially with De Bonte being ranked number three in Glory's welterweight rankings. Both fighters have knockout power and can end their fights in heartbeat, this fight could very well be just as exciting as the welterweight tournament final between Holzken and Joseph Valtellini.

Joseph Valtellini vs. Karapet Karapetyan
Valtellini suffered his first loss since joining Glory in the welterweight tournament finals against Nieky Holzken but "Bazooka" made sure to leave an impression. Going back and forth the entire fight rather than hang back Valtellini decided to go for it all in the final seconds and unfortunately it didn't work out. Although the result says (T)KO, that is somewhat questionable because there was no time remaining for them to fight and he had gotten back up to his feet. Seems like it was more of a bad call by the referee. So what should Valtellini do next, a fight against Karapet Karapetyan wouldn't be bad. Holzken out pointed Karapetyan who is currently ranked number four in Glory's welterweight rankings. Valtellini would get a chance to get back on track with a solid win and begin to climb that ladder again so he can earn his re-match with Holzken.

Daniel Ghita vs. Rico Verhoeven
Rico Verhoeven and Daniel Ghita met in the Glory heavyweight tournament final with Verhoeven out pointing Ghita. Both fighters have now fought and won since their first fight and a re-match is something fight fans are buzzing about. There really doesn't need to be much more of an explanation because the fans will get excited for this one.

Mosab Amrani vs. Masaaki Noiri
Amrani outpointed Glory featherweight tournament winner Yuta Kubo at Glory 13. The obvious fight for him is a rematch with Masaaki Noiri. Amrani was out pointed by Noiri in the featherweight tournament semi-finals and is also currently ranked number three in the Glory rankings one spot right behind Amrani. This seems like the next logical fight to make for Amrani.

Artur Kyshenko vs. Jordan Watson
Kyshenko is good enough that he could be put in against almost anyone and there are few rematches that we bet Kyshenko wouldn't mind getting, but throwing him against Watson would be perfect. Both fighters get a chance to add a good name to their win list and they haven't fought before which gives Glory the chance to capitalize on re-matches after getting some time to promote Kyshenko under the Glory banner.

The K-1 Max Quarterfinal bout between Andy Souwer and Enriko Kehl scheduled for this weekend's K-1 event will not longer be taking place. Both Souwer and Kehl were forced to withdraw from the event, Souwer after having surgery due to appendicitis and Kehl because of a cut he received from his recent fight with Buakaw that will not be healed in time.

Shane Campbell will now fight the winner of the tournament reserve bout Christopher Mena at this weekend at the K-1 event in China instead of Mazimo Suarez at the the January 11th K-1 event in Spain. Due to the shuffle Suarez will now fight Enriko Kehl at the January 11th event, while it seems that Souwer is no longer in the tournament.
