Lion Fight 12 took place tonight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The main event on the night featured Fabio Pinca vs. Malaipet Sasiprapa in a Lion Fight welterweight title fight.

Malaipet was riding a four fight win streak coming into the bout and he looked solid in the first round, he came out aggressive with his punches and kicks in the first round and taunted Pinca quite often. Once the second round started it was a completely different fight, Pinca was the aggressor and he started opening up with his strikes and looked solid in the clinch. The third round was closer but Pinca was still able to out strike Malaipet and control the round. Come the fourth and fifth rounds the fight completely became Pinca’s. He pressed forward as Malaipet backed away, Pinca connected with punches and kicks and when they clinched Pinca out worked Malaipet with knees to the body and the occasional elbow. Malaipet had no answer as Pinca’s strikes continued to land clean. Pinca motioned at Malaipet to meet him the center to no avail, he continued to press the fight and Malaipet continued to back up. In the end it was clear who had won the fight and the judges agreed as well awarding Fabio Pinca the unanimous decision victory.

In the night’s co-main event Tiffany Van Soest completely out classed Magali Foroni. It was evident once the fight started that Foroni was not in the same class as Van Soest. It quickly turned into a one sided affair that looked more like target practice for Van Soest. Foroni offered little to no offense for two plus rounds until her corner threw in the towel midway through the third round. Another dominant performance for Tiffany Van Soest who remains undefeated and improves her record to 8-0-1.

Nick Chasteen made a successful pro debut against Chris Culley. Chasteen attacked Culley’s legs early and it seemed to pay dividends as Cully seemed to stay at bay until he was ready to move in with a flurry. Despite a few strong flurries from Culley, Chasteen remained composed and pressed the action backing Culley into the ropes frequently and landing his strikes. In the end all three judges awarded him a unanimous decision.

Jason Andrada and Mohammed Lemjerdine were involved in an exciting fight. As soon as the fight started Andrada scored a flash knockdown on Lemjerdine, although it seemed like Lemjerdine was more off balance rather than being hurt. In the second round Lemjerdine seemed to take control with his punches and short elbows when in close, but in the third round the tide shifted and it was all Andrada. In the fourth round the momentum continued to shift back and forth as both fighters landed solid strikes. In the fifth and final round it seemed Lemjerdine was in control as he continuously backed Andrada into the ropes. Lemjerdine got a little over aggressive and in a flurry he backed Andrada into the ropes who in return countered with a perfectly timed elbow that sent Lemjerdine crashing to the canvas. It was a stellar knockout by Andrada. With the win Andrada improves to 4-0.

Stephen Richards used some crisp boxing and excellent movement to out point Glen Spencer for five rounds. Spencer was a game opponent, but Richards was just a step quicker throughout the fight. All three judges awarded Richards the fight giving him a unanimous decision win.

In other action Anthony Castrejon scored a first round knockout over Miguel Rosales with a perfectly timed head kick and Miranda Cayabyab defeated Kaiyana Rain by split decision.

Glory has made four bouts official for Glory 13 in addition to the already confirmed welterweight tournament bouts. The main event will feature Daniel Ghita vs. Errol Zimmerman. Also confirmed for the event are Dustin Jacoby vs. Makoto Uehara, Peter Aerts vs. Rico Verhoeven, and Remy Bonjasky vs. Anderson Silva.

Ghita returns to action after recently coming up short in the finals of the Glory heavyweight tournament at Glory 11 in Chicago. Ghita won his first fight on the night by KO over Anderson Silva, but was out pointed by Rico Verhoeven in the final. Zimmerman defeated Hesdy Gerges at Glory 11 by KO in tournament reserve bout.

Glory heavyweight tournament champion Rico Verhoeven will get to add a legend to his name if he can pull out the win against Peter Aerts. Verhoeven stamped his name on the heavyweight kickboxing scene with his wins over Gokhan Saki and Daniel Ghita at Glory 11. Aerts will look to score another knockout over a much younger fighter. Earlier this year he scored a KO over heavy hitting Jamal Ben Saddik at Glory 8.

Matches to make after Lion Fight 12

$

Lion Fight 12 took place this past weekend and some of North America’s top fighters were in action as well as some up and coming prospects.

Malaipet Sasiprapa dropped a decision to Fabio Pinca in the night’s main event, and Tiffany Van Soest notched another dominant victory in the co-main event against Magali Foroni. Some big knockouts were scored as well by Anthony Castrejon and Jason Andrada.

Here we play match maker and suggest some fights we think might be good fights for the North American based fighters that competed at Lion Fight 12.

Malaipet Sasiprapa vs. Kevin Ross
A few years ago this was the biggest fight to ever hit American soil. Kevin Ross scored a huge win over Malaipet and really helped push him to the forefront of the American Muay Thai movement. The buildup was great, with Malaipet making claims of not needing to train for Americans, setting the stage for an exciting bout. With both fighters under contract it would be a great re-match to see at Lion Fight; not only would it be exciting, but it would likely draw a lot of buzz for the Vegas-based promotion. Can Malaipet get his revenge against Ross or will Ross prevail once again? If Malaipet were to win, this could turn into a great Muay Thai trilogy. Something that could really help continue to boost Muay Thai in America. Although getting that trilogy to happen will be easier said than done, Ross would undoubtedly look to prove that the first time was no fluke and that he is still the better fighter.

Tiffany Van Soest vs. Denise Kielholtz

Van Soest has run through most of her competition. Her athleticism has not been matched in the ring yet and that has given her the biggest edge over her opponents. Her movement in the ring and her explosiveness are exceptional. Fans are craving for Van Soest to get a stiff test, someone Van Soest won’t simply mow down. That test could come in the form of Dutch striker Denise Kielholtz. Time Bomb vs. Miss Dynamite should result in fireworks in the ring and a fight that would be very pleasing for fans.

Nick Chasteen vs. Artem Sharoshkin

Chasteen made a successful pro debut with his unanimous decision win over Chris Culley. Chasteen is a big man for the 147lb weight division and that should give him advantages in his fights. He seemed a bit hesitant at times in his fight with Culley, but that might just have been pro debut jitters because when engaged by Culley he was more than willing to fire back. An opponent that pushes the pace would be perfect for Chasteen, Artem Sharoshkin is that opponent. The two previously fought as amateurs with Sharoshkin scoring a knockout over Chasteen. It would be an exciting fight with Sharoshkin’s move forward style and Chasteen’s ability and willingness to hold firm in the pocket and trade. Not to mention that revenge being on Chasteen’s mind is always perfect recipe to make sure a fight is exciting.

Jason Andrada vs. Anthony Castrejon

The pair met as amateurs at the first ever Lion Fight event in February of 2011. Castrejon and Andrada were both some of the top amateurs in the Las Vegas area, however, the bout was short lived as Castrejon landed a head kick that ended Andrada’s night in the first round. Both have been successful since entering the pro ranks with Andrada accumulating a 4-0 mark and Castrejon 5-1. None of these fighters is ever involved in a boring fight, put them in the ring together again and we should see what would most likely be fight of the night, possibly fight of the year.

Stephen Richards vs. Brett Hlavacek
Richard and Hlavacek were supposed fight at the Warriors Cup earlier this year but the fight fell through. Richards has some of the best boxing in the North American Muay Thai circuit and it would be interesting to see how it would match us with Hlavacek’s clinch heavy style. This would definitely be a match-up of styles.

Glen Spencer vs. Marcus Fisher
Spencer had a three fight win streak snapped against Stephen Richards. A good match up would be against Pittsburgh’s Marcus Fisher. Each fighter would receive a solid test and a nice boost with a win. Spencer is known for letting his knees flying and Fisher is known for having one of the strongest clinch attacks in the North American circuit. This would also be another match-up of styles that would be interesting to watch.

Canadian Sean Kearney and Thai power house Singmanee Kaewsamrit have been booked to fight on December 4th in Bangkok, Thailand for the King's Birthday. Up for grabs will be Singmanee's WPMF welterweight title.

Kearney recently scored what was the biggest win of his career when he defeated fellow Canadian Matt Embree by split decision at PKP "World Stand Off 5". A win over the likes of Singmanee Kaewsamrit would easily be his biggest career accomplishment.

Singmanee is a former Rajadmnern Stadium champion, Thai Fight tournament champion, and Isuzu Cup champion. Training out of the high respected Kaewsamrit Gym, he will undoubtedly be the stiffest test Kearney has face in his career.

10 Facts with Rami Ibrahim

Rami Ibrahim is one of the top fighters from the east coast. He has been fighting professionally since 1992 and owns Sitan Gym Philadelphia.

Known for his never quit attitude in the ring and his excellent boxing, Rami has gained fans for continuing to press forward until the end of his fights. He has also established himself as one of the best coaches in North America when it comes to young up and coming talent. Fighting out of his gym he has several up and coming fighters including the likes of Ahmad Ibrahim, Cesar Ramirez, Daniel Diaz and Elias Mendez, all age 17 or under.

We recently saw Rami post ten facts about himself on social media and thought it would be great to get a series going where fighters list ten facts about themselves to allow fans to get to know them a little better. The best way to get this series going is with Rami Ibrahim. Below are ten facts provided by Rami Ibrahim so that you can not only get to know the fighter, but the man.

1. I was born in Kuwait, but the fact that I was born in Kuwait isn't worthy enough to get a Kuwaiti citizenship because my origin is from Palestine, so they give people like me (from Palestinian origin) a Jordanian citizenship, a country I wasn't even born in or been too.

2. I am the youngest of 6 children, all of which are boys.

3. Jobs I've had, before my pro fight career kicked off; pier captain on international boats coming from overseas, chef, pizza delivery driver, and school teacher.

4. My first fight nickname "The Arabian Nightmare", was given to me because a trainer forced his fighter (who's also his son) to take a kickboxing fight against me, so his son ran away from home from fear of fighting me. When people in my gym found out they started making fun of me saying "what do you think you are the Arabian nightmare?" So since they started calling me that as a joke, it stuck with me.

5. My favorite things to do is play pool, go to the movies and eat.

6. My favorite fashion design is Express and Diesel.

7. My favorite color is green because it was also the favorite color for Prophet Mohammed (may peace and blessings be upon him).

8. I was accused and arrested for raping a girl. No it wasn't me and I was wrongly accused.

9. A teacher who didn't like me in high school saw me peeling an orange with a kitchen knife (the size of my palm) during my senior year and got me kicked out of the entire Philadelphia school district through the "zero tolerance rule" that with my luck was installed that year.

10. At the age of 4 I was kidnapped.

Trainer's Corner: Jason Fenton

Muay Thai in North America is has been on the upswing the past few years. North American based fighters are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve, so we figured why not shed some light on the men behind the fighters, their trainers. Here in the Trainer’s Corner we will be interviewing North American based trainers so fight fans can familiarize themselves with them. The first coach we interview is Canada’s Jason Fenton.

Name: Jason Fenton

Gym: Iron City

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Pro Fighters: Sean Kearney, Dejan Kajic

MTA: How did you get started in Muay Thai?

Jason: I started training Muay Thai in 1993 when I was 15 years old in Calgary. I was not interested in doing a "traditional" martial art so I found a Muay Thai gym that one of my friends trained at and I made the choice to go there and give that a try.

MTA: When did you start teaching?

Jason: I started assisting with teaching classes 2 years after I started training and another year later I started teaching classes on my own.

MTA: Did you fight before teaching Muay Thai?

Jason: Yes I had my first fight after only six months of training, so by the time I started assisting with classes I had already had close to 15 fights.

MTA: What was the gym you trained or fought out of?

Jason: I first started training/fighting and teaching at Mike Miles National Kickboxing and Muay Thai in Calgary under Ajarn Mike Miles. Then after 10 years I moved out to Vancouver and started training and fighting with Mr. Vince Jauncey, who was a great fighter from the UK and now, owns one of the top Kickboxing gyms here in the greater Vancouver area. I also started teaching out of Vince's gym WKX - World Kickboxing/Xtrm Fitness.

MTA: Why did you decide to start teaching?

Jason: I originally started teaching more to help out rather than a desire to begin teaching. After a few months I noticed that teaching acutely helped me with my training and the improvement of my technique as a fighter.

MTA: What is your favorite memory from your fighting days?

Jason: I have so many great memories from my fighting days, from representing Canada all over the world to meeting some of the greatest people that I now have the honour of calling friends. But I guess my favorite memory was getting to fight my idol Jongsanan "Wooden Man", I lost a 5 round decision.

MTA: How was the transition from fighter to teacher?

Jason: The transition was not that difficult because throughout the majority of my fight career I was still teaching full time. I guess the biggest thing now is I can concentrate 100% on teaching my students without any interruptions.

MTA: Where do you teach out of now?

Jason: After teaching under the banners of other gyms for 12 years I finally opened my own gym (Iron City). It is located in Vancouver Canada I opened the doors September 4th, 2008.

MTA: As a trainer what are your goals with your fighters?

Jason: As a trainer I have 2 main goals for my fighters. The first is I want to make sure that they get the same opportunities to travel and represent Canada that I had when I was fighting. The second goal is to do everything in my power to make sure that all of my fighters one day surpass my achievements in this sport.

MTA: What is your best memory thus far about being a trainer?

Jason: I have so many great memories some for training both fighters and non fighting students. The best as a fighter trainer would have to be just seeing the growth and improvement of each of my fighters from fight to fight and knowing that they trust me to help with that growth and improvement. I would have to say my best memory for training my non fighter students would be seeing the growth of each of them. To see people come in for the first time and being shy and even timid and watching them gain confidence thru the sport that I am teaching is an amazing feeling.

MTA: What is the worst or hardest memory from being a trainer?

Jason: I guess the worst memories I have as a trainer thus far would be watching one of my fighters lose. It is not the loss that is the hard part because every fighter will lose, but I then second guess the training we did for that camp and I feel the loss is my responsibility as the trainer.

MTA: How important is the relationship between fighter and trainer and why?

Jason: I think the relationship between the fighter and the trainer is very important. The fighter must be willing to put all of their faith in their trainers not only to make sure that they are in the best possible shape they can be but to make sure all their weapons are as sharp as they can be when it comes to fight time. In my opinion it is similar to a parent/child relationship. The trainer wants their fighters be growing past where they were when they fought and learn from the mistakes that they made.

MTA: What are your thoughts on the current state of North American Muay Thai?

Jason: The talent pool in North America is deeper than it has ever been. North American fighters have proven over the last couple years that they deserve to be on the world stage. There are a lot of great promotions that are starting to get television coverage from Push Kick Promotions and Lion Fight doing Muay Thai and Glory for Kickboxing. Mark my words we will start seeing more quality World Champions (WBC, WMC, WPMF) coming out of North America over the next couple years.

MTA: Any words of advice for people looking to get into the sport of Muay Thai?

Jason: The advice I would give to people who are just looking to train, learn some new skills and have fun I would just say find a place that you feel comfortable and enjoy spending time. If you are looking to fight and compete is do your research, look deeper into the trainer and their lineage, not only if they were fighters themselves but also have they produced the kind of fighters that you want to become.

Glory 12 Results and Recap: Andy Ristie shocks the world with two huge knockouts

$

0
Glory 12 took place tonight in New York and it was a night full of surprises. In the Glory lightweight tournament most were expecting to see a tournament final featuring Giorgio Petrosyan who has not lost since 2007, but Andy Ristie had other plans. In a fight that was pretty even things changed in a heartbeat in the third round when Ristie landed a left uppercut that knocked Petrosyan out. Despite Petrosyan's effort to get back to his feet he was clearly on wobbly legs and could not continue.

In the night’s other semi-final bout Robin van Roosmalen out pointed Davit Kiria for three rounds to win a unanimous decision. In the final, however, van Roosmalen would not see things go his way. Not only did Ristie not get the memo that Petrosyan was supposed to win this tournament, he also didn’t get the memo that van Roosmalen is a wrecking machine not to be messed with. Ristie knocked van Roosmalen down in round one and then again in round two with van Roosmalen not being able to answer the referee’s count in the second round thus giving Ristie the win. This was a huge night for Ristie as he not only beat the top two fighters in Glory’s lightweight division, but he knocked them both out.

In other action Glory middleweight tournament champion Joe Schilling took on Wayne Barrett. Schilling was considered the favorite, but like with Ristie it seems that Barrett did not get the memo. This was Barrett’s fourth pro fight, but you wouldn’t know it as he looked confident in the ring. Barrett struck first in the second round when he knocked Schilling down not once, but twice.
The first knockdown came from an over hand right and the second early in round two and the second from a right hook as the round ended. In the third round Schilling was able to gain some ground back when he connected with a knee that dropped Barrett, but he was able to beat the count. The fight went to the judges and Barrett was awarded a unanimous decision victory in a huge win for his young career.

In another of the night’s super fights Australian Ben Edwards scored a third round knockout over Moroccan Jamal Ben Saddik. In the tournament reserve bout American Ky Hollenbeck used his unorthodox style to out point late replacement Warren Stevelmans to earn a unanimous decision victory.

In the night’s under card Francois Ambang scored a (T)KO over Eddie Walker due to leg kicks in the third round and Brian Collette scored a tremendous head kick knockout over Warren Thompson in the first round. Artem Vakhitov also scored a unanimous decision over Nenad Pagonis and Saulo Cavalari scored a devastating knockout over Mourad Bouzidi.

The KOK World GP 2013 took place this past Saturday in Germany. The night’s tournament featured eight fighters in the one night 156lb division. Some of the more notable names in tournament on the night were Mohammed El-Mir, Max Baumert and Alex Vogel, but the night’s champion ended up being Chris Baya. The Dutch fighter met Alex Vogel in the tournament fighter after having scored knockouts against Andrii Panov and Max Baumert to get to the final. It didn’t take Baya much time to claim his tournament victory as he knocked out Alex Vogel with a knee to the head in the first round.

In some super fight action Artur Kyshenko wasted little time against Baker Bakarat. He knocked Bakarat down in the first round with a body kick and eventually won the fight when it was stopped in the first round by the doctor due to cuts.

Denis Schneidmiller and William Diender went the distance. In the early rounds the fight was a bit slow, but once the fourth round came around the fireworks started as both fighters really tried to impose their will. In the end Schneidmiller was awarded a decision victory.
