CROM’S CORNER: Update Your Training Software

$

by Chris Romulo

If you are still doing bicep curls, leg extensions, and triceps push downs you are still playing Atari in an X Box world.

The world of combat sports: Muay Thai, MMA, Boxing, Wrestling and/or BJJ are some of the most dynamic and progressive means of competition around today. The thought of testing your combat abilities against another willing and able opponent is one of the most rigorous things you can put your body through and you’re training should reflect that. Muay Thai, “The Art of 8 Limbs”, “The King Of The Ring”, or “The Most Distinguished Art of Fighting” requires a practitioner to have agility, balance, endurance, flexibility, power, speed, strength and stability. All of this can be achieved through the practice of the art. Learning kicks, punches, knees and elbows will enhance all of your athletic attributes but if you want to take your training to the next level, one crucial way is to improve or integrate a strength& conditioning routine, especially if you are a competitor/fighter.

Here in the U.S. and in some other regions of the world Muay Thai is a recreational sport. Even the most successful Professional Muay Thai fighters in the U.S. must look for other avenues of income. Many look for sponsorship, coach entry level Muay Thai students, perhaps run their own gym, or hold down a full time job to pay the bills, which eats up a lot of training time to prepare for ring combat. Very few, if any, can rely solely on a Muay Thai purse to support themselves or their family.

Conversely, in Thailand, most fighters start at an early age training like a professional. Young NakMuays train two times a day at the very least, six days a week, living at the training camps in hopes to make it to the big time. Keeping both lifestyles in mind, Thai fighterscan get away with their marathon skill training sessions and a rudimentary strength & conditioning routine.

Here in the states, we don’t have the luxury to train from when we can walk and watch our elders (who might have been fighters) ringside as they compete/fight to feed their families.

If you want to develop a competitive advantage, update your training software.

Muay Thai fighters are not body builders. Aesthetics have no function in the ring, so hitting off a set of bicep curls is a waste of time. Three sets of ten reps of bench pressing will not enhance one’s prowess in the ring. Strength & Conditioning for fighters should resemble how one engages in the ring. I call it “pressure for time” training and ring fight is exactly that. You are under pressure for a set amount of time (2-3 minute rounds depending) to be the faster, stronger and more dominate opposition.

Who wins in a fight?

Typically the busier, more active and conditioned athlete will prevail. Does your Strength & Conditioning routine address this kind of situation? Skills are useless if your heart and lungs tire out before you can really engage in the fight. The “pressure for time” principal is about pushing your body to its limit as a complete unit under regulated time periods, mirroring the pressure which occurs during each round of a fight. Whether you think in terms of 3-2 minute rounds, 5-3 minute rounds, or 3-5 minute rounds, structure your S&C efforts with full body dynamic movements to simulate what will happen during the course of your bout. For Muay Thai fighters, if you kick and punch properly, every muscle of your body, from toes to fingertips, are hitting your target: whether it’s your opponent, heavybag or Thai pads. Begin to use movements like kettlebell swings, dumbbell renegade rows, burpees and medicine ball slams to get your body moving right.

There are a multitude of exercises to get you moving more dynamically so keep your mind open to this thought: Skills and talent are important but lets add fuel to the fire by making sure your heart and lungs not only keep you in the fight but push you to finish the fight.

Lion Fight 25 Fight Breakdown: John Wayne Parr vs. Cosmo Alexandre

$
0
0

Lion Fight 25 takes place this Friday, October 23rd at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA. The night's main event features a rubber match between John Wayne Parr and Cosmo Alexandre. This is a highly anticipated bout between two elite Muay Thai fighters.

Parr and Alexandre have split a pair of fights, and it will be interesting to see which fighter emerges victorious in their third encounter. The first fight between the two happened over eight years ago at Evolution 12 in Australia. Parr was the winner that night taking home a unanimous decision over Alexandre. The second bout happened six years go at Evolution 17 as part of a one night 8-man tournament. Alexandre defeated Parr by (T)KO due to leg kicks in the tournament semi-finals.

John Wayne Parr
Parr has seemed to defy father time, he is pushing 40 and has won nine of his last ten fights with five of those wins coming by (T)KO. In that streak he has scored wins over some top tier fighters including Mike Zambidis, Yohan Lidon, Jordan Tai, and Marco Pique. His only loss in that ten fight span is to highly touted Toby Smith

Parr is a technical fighter that likes to control a fight. He presses the action when he needs to and makes sure to keep busy throughout. He has a high output of strikes when he fights and that should help him score points on the judges card as Alexandre has proven to be a difficult fighter to finish.

Alexandre enters the fight with Parr on a four fight win streak, including victories of Dzhabar Askerov and Marco Pique. Like Parr, Alexandre has been in the ring with the best of the best in his career. Alexandre holds a win over Parr by (T)KO, but it should be noted that both fighters had already fought one fight on the night of the tournament and Parr took significant damage to his leg in his first bout. It was visibly affecting him in the semi-final bout and Alexandre was able to capitalize and get the (T)KO win.

Cosmo Alexandre
Traditionally Alexandre has been his own worst enemy in his fights. He is a notorious slow starter and it has cost him when it comes to fights going the distance. Alexandre has a height and reach advantage and he needs to keep Parr at bay with a stiff jab and a solid push kick. When Parr gets inside he likes to unload in bunches, but if Alexandre could successfully keep him at a distance then he can slow the fight down. Alexandre can't afford to take the early rounds of the fight off because he might dig himself a hole he won't be able to dig himself out of later and it could cost him on the judges score cards if the fight goes the distance.

Parr is going to come out and put on a show, that is a guarantee. He likes to go out and let his weapons fly. Alexandre likes to fight a slower pace, but has the tools to cause some serious damage. The questions that loom around this fight are pretty simple. Will father time catch up with John Wayne Parr? Will Cosmo be aggressive enough early in the bout? Those seem to be the real deciding factors in this fight because both are highly talented individuals. It will come down to who can successfully control the fight. Can Parr get inside and score points on Alexandre with his high volume style, or can Alexandre slow the pace of the fight down?

It will definitely be interesting to see who gets the better of the other. It doesn't seem likely this one will end in a stoppage unless it is from a cut or an injury. Who do you think wins the rubber match between these Parr and Alexandre?

Yokkao is set to return to Macron Stadium in Bolton, England. Yokkao 17 and Yokkao 18 will follow their recent trend of two shows in one night. The events are set for March 19, 2016 and they have announced the main event for Yokkao 18 to be a re-match between current Yokkao 70kg Champion Sanny Dahlbeck and Jordan Watson.

The pair previously fought at Yokkao 12. Watson was the newly crowned Yokkao 70kg champion at the time and was looking to make his first title defense. The fight was nothing but excitement as neither fighter wanted to give up any ground. Going into the fourth round it was a close fight and then Dahlbeck scored a huge knockdown with a barrage of punches, knees, and elbows. Watson recovered, but was again sent down to the canvas. Watson once again beat the referee's count, but Dahlbeck hell bent on ending this fight. He began to unleash a fury of strikes that had Watson hurt and the referee stepped in and stopped the bout.

If the re-match is anything like the first fight between these two then fans are in for a treat.

The Muay Thai and Kickboxing world is filled with amateur fighters. Most of the amateurs won't turn into a professional fighter for one reason or another, while some will go on to make excellent pro athletes. If they go into the pro ranks or not one fact remains, they play a significant role in shaping the future of Muay Thai and Kickboxing. This week's Amateur Spotlight segment features Pawel Zawistowski.

Pawel who fights out of Kings Combat Fitness in Queens, NY recently won the Friday Night Fights 8-Man Tournament. We were able to catch up with Pawel and talk about why he started training, winning the tournament and his future goals.

MTA: When and why did you start training Muay Thai?

Pawel: I started Muay Thai about 4 years ago. I always was a fan of combat sports especially stand up fighting, one day a friend of mine convinced me to try it out myself. A little time later I fell in love with Muay Thai and have been practicing ever since.

MTA: What gym do you represent and what is your record?

Pawel: I fight out of Kings Combat Fitness, it is located in Queens, NY. Dave Wai Moy is my Muay Thai coach and Andrew Rivera is my strength and conditioning coach. My record is 24W 4L.

MTA: What is your best memory since you started competing in Muay Thai?

Pawel: I would say the best memories are wining for the first time and also a victory in a title fight. Absolutely amazing feeling even until now.

MTA: When you started training was your goal to become a fighter?

Pawel: At first I never thought I'd be fighting but after a year of training 6 days a week I told myself why not fight if I'm here training every day. So that's how it begun.

MTA: Is going pro something you are planning to do?

Pawel: Yea I am planning on going pro very soon. I think I'm ready for it and whatever the future brings.

MTA: When can we expect to see you make your pro debut?

Pawel: Hopefully end of this year or beginning of the next. Time will tell.

MTA: What are your strengths that you think will help you in your transition to the pro ranks?

Pawel: The strengths that will help me transition are my consistency, dedication and power of will. Every time I train for a fight I make sure I put in work and that I train hard every day.

MTA: You recently won the Friday Night Fights 8 man tournament. Can you describe to us the tournament atmosphere and how you felt after winning the tournament?

Pawel: The atmosphere in the room was incredible. Winning in front of my home town crowd and to be the first New Yorker to do so was epic.

MTA: What are your future goals in Muay Thai?

Pawel: The main goal is to be "the best in the world".

MTA: What do you think will be the biggest adjustment going from amateur to pro when you make that step?

Pawel: The biggest adjustment definitely the different pace, longer rounds, tougher competition that means train even harder. Besides that everything is pretty much the same.

MTA: Who are some of your favorite fighters?

Pawel: There is a few Ernesto Hoost, Ramon Dekkers, Robin van Roosmalen, Tyrone Spong, Saenchai.
