Updated Super Lightweight Rankings 8/1/2014

There is some shake up in the rankings this time around. Ross reclaims the number one spot he held a few years ago after his current three fight win streak that ended with him winning the Lion Fight Super Lightweight World Title. Former number one ranked Sean Kearney falls to number two and Matt Embree falls from two to three.

The super lightweight division in North America is stacked and any of these top five fighters can have an argument made for them that they deserve to be ranked higher. It will be interesting to see how the divisions sorts out in the next few months.

1. Kevin Ross (20-10) (@DaSoulAssassin)
Ross has been on a tear as of late. He has now rattled off three consecutive wins, including his latest dominant decision victory over Australia’s Michael “Tomahawk” Thompson which won him the Lion Fight Super Lightweight Championship. Ross also evened the score with Matt Embree by taking a split decision back in February, and in May scored a (T)KO over up and comer Chris Mauceri. With Ross now the Lion Fight champion there are a slew of possible match ups so it will be interesting to see who the promotion chooses for Ross to defend his title against first.

2. Sean Kearney (25-9)
After earning a huge win over Matt Embree in September of 2013 Kearney headed back to Thailand. He decided to jump back up to 147 pounds to take on Thai powerhouse Singmanee Kaewsamrit. Kearney has currently been out of action since the loss to Singmanee in December of 2013. Kearney will be competing on the Max Muay Thai event taking place on August 3rd against Sanpetch Kiatpetchnoi in Thailand.

3. Matt Embree (25-6) (@Muay_Matics)
Embree has gone 1-2 in his last three bouts, although his two losses have been narrow and to the two men currently ranked above him. He dropped a split a split decision to Sean Kearney at PKP “World Stand Off 5” in September of 2013, then got back on the winning track in October of 2013 by winning a one sided decision against Zhang Haishun at Foshan Championships in China. Most recently he dropped a split decision to Kevin Ross at Lion Fight in February. He is currently set to fight Justin Greskiewicz in September at USKA Fight Night.

4. Gabriel Varga (10-2)
Varga followed up a solid showing at the Glory 8 featherweight tournament (Super Lightweight) with a win over Jose Palacios at Glory 11 in Chicago and just recently won the Glory featherweight tournament at Glory 17 in Los Angeles. He defeated Yodkhunpon Sitmonchai and Shane Oblonsky by decision. Currently under contract to Glory it is unknown when Varga will compete again.

5. Hakeem Dawodu (7-0)
Dawodu has run his pro record to 7-0 and most recently defeated Junpei Hiari by (T)KO and and Sam Samut by decision. Dawodu has started to dabble in MMA, hopefully for Muay Thai and Kickboxing fans this young talent does not fully transition to MMA because it he is definitely someone that could be sitting at the top of these rankings in years to come. His next Muay Thai bout is currently unkown. .

Rankings qualification - Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts are all taken into consideration for the rankings. These rankings are not only based on Muay Thai Fights as many fighters compete in both full rules Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts. Fighters are not to be inactive for any period longer than 12 months or they will be dropped from the rankings unless a fight is schedule within a month from the date they become ineligible. Fighters must be born in North America or permanently reside in North America and be active in the North American fight circuit are eligible for the rankings.

Lion Fight 17 took place last night at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. Lion Fight’s second trip to the east coast featured a re-match between Malaipet Sasiprapa vs. Justin Greskiewicz in the main event.

Malaipet immediately took the fight to Greskiewicz, knocking down the Philadelphian with a perfectly timed right hand in the first round. Grewkiewicz was able to recover and fight through the round, although in the second it was all Malaipet once again. Moving into the third round Malaipet was in full control and hit some nice sweeps, but Greskiewicz showed he still had fuel left in the tank as he scored with a nice flurry. In the fourth and fifth rounds Malaipet seemed to slow down and Greskiewicz began to increase his output, but it was too little too late as Malaipet once again defeated Greskiewicz by unanimous decision.

In the co-main event Cosmo Alexandre took on Jo Nattawut and it was a chess match between them. The fight started off slow as both fighters seemed to be defensive minded but near the end of the third round things started to pick up. Alexnadre and Nattawut both used a full offensive arsenal and it made scoring this fight difficult. When the fight was done it could have gone to either fighter or even a draw, but the judges decided that Nattawut was the winner and he was awarded a split decision.

Brett Hlavacek and Cyrus Washington met in another re-match. Hlavacek came out and took control early in the bout and scored a knockdown of Washington in the second round. Hlavacek seemed to fade near the end of the third a bit and Washington tried to rally late but it wasn’t enough as Hlavacek was awarded the majority decision win.

In what was probably the most impressive performance of the night Victor Saravia improved his pro record to 2-0 with a KO win over Andy Singh. He came out and took the fight to Singh early and was in full control. In the fourth round a head kick from Saravia knocked Singh down and then after the count a flurry from Saravia ended Singh’s night. The official end came at 1:42 of the fourth round.

The two other pro fights on the night were Rami Ibrahim vs. Carlos Lopez and Tim Amorim vs. Pedro Gonzalez. Ibrahim and Lopez went back and forth and in the end It was Lopez’s effective elbow strikes that were the difference maker as the judges gave him a unanimous decision win. Gonzalez for the second time in a row scored a stoppage win over one of North America’s up and coming fighters. He took the fight early to Amorim and he couldn’t handle the aggressive style that Gonzalez brought. The bout was stopped by the referee in the fourth round.

Results:
Malaipet Sasiprapa def. Justin Greskiewicz via Unanimous Decision
Jo Nattawut def. Cosmo Alexandre via Split Decision
Brett Hlavacek def. Cyrus Washington via Majority Decision
Carlos Lopez def. Rami Ibrahim via Unanimous Decision
Victor Saravia def. Andy Singh via KO at 1:42 in Rd. 4
Pedro Gonzalez def. Tim Amorim via (T)KO (Referee Stoppage) at 1:43 in Rd. 4

KO of the Week: Yodsanklai Fairtex vs. Artem Levin

This week's KO of the Week features two power houses in the Muay Thai world meeting under Kickboxing rules. Yodsanklai and Artem Levin met at K-1 in Scandinavia in 2008 in what at the time was the biggest fight of Levin's career. Only 21 years of age, he was trying to score an upset over the Thai powerhouse that is Yodsanklai. In the first round the action was fast paced and Levin was holding his own with Yodsanklai, but in the second round the Thai veteran took over and ended up knocking out Levin. It was an exciting fight from start to finish and if you have never seen it or have been used to Levin's dominance in recent years it is definitely a fight to watch.

Matches to make after Lion Fight 17

Lion Fight 17 took place this past weekend and there were some exciting fights on the night. Malaipet Sasiprapa returned to the winning track with a decision win over Justin Greskiewicz and Jo Nattawut scored a split decision victory over Cosmo Alexandre. Victor Saravia also impressed with a knockout of Andy Singh.

With the exciting event now behind us we play match maker and suggest some fights that would make sense for the winners and some of the losers from Lion Fight 17 that are based in North America. Since Justin Greskiewicz already has his next bout announced against Matt Embree we will not be matching up Greskiewicz.

Malaipet Sasiprapa vs. Jose Palacios
Malaipet has proven that he can still defeat most fighters he faces, however, before Lion Fight throws him in against another fighter the caliber of Fabio Pinca it would be best to give him a stiff test. Palacios would be perfect, the pair fought in 2012 in a bout that Palacios took on short notice. Malaipet won a split decision so it would be interesting to see how he would fare against a prepared Jose Palacios.

Jo Nattawut vs. Shane Campbell
The Atlanta based Nattawut stunned many fans when he defeated Cosmo Alexandre by split decision. After scoring a huge win over Cosmo a solid match up would be against Shane Campbell. Before his recent loss to Enriko Khel under the K-1 banner, Campbell had won seven straight bouts. Having fought for Lion Fight before it would be a great match up, especially when Lion Fight returns to the east coast.

Cosmo Alexandre vs. Chike Lindsay
Despite the loss Cosmo remains one of the best fighters currently based in the United States. He has size and technique that would give all his opponents fits, another Nak Muay that has size and power is Atlanta’s Chike Lindsay. Last year Lindsay proved his toughness when he went five rounds with Yodsanklai. Cosmo vs. Lindsay would be an excellent fight for fans to enjoy.

Brett Hlavacek vs. Stephen Richards
Hlavacek and Richards have been matched up before but the bout has not been able to happen. The match up would be great for both fighters. Richards possesses excellent boxing and it would be interesting to see how Hlavacek’s more traditional Muay Thai style can deal with a savvy veteran like Richards.

Carlos Lopez vs. Gaston Bolanos
Lopez scored a nice win over a veteran like Rami Ibrahim. A fight against the fast rising Gaston Bolanos would be the perfect follow up to his win over Ibrahim. Bolanos brings and explosive style and both fighters in the ring together should provide fireworks for fans. If Lopez wins it’s another solid win on his record and for Bolanos it’s a solid fight for him to take in his young career as a pro.

Rami Ibrahim vs. Adrian Morilla
Ibrahim may only be 32 years old but his body has some mileage on it. The man has been fighting Muay Thai, MMA and Boxing professionally for over a decade. Morilla would be a solid match up for Ibrahim and a nice way for him to get back on track as it doesn’t seem that Ibrahim will be slowing down any time soon. Morilla is a solid fight and although he has come up short in recent fights he still presents a danger to his opponents because of his explosiveness.

Victor Saravia vs. Jason Andrada
Saravia has impressed in his two pro fights. He knocked out Anthony Castrejon and Andy Singh, both fighters that had their sights set on Jason Andrada. Coming off the first loss of his career it would be the perfect match up to take place. If Saravia scores a win over Andrada then he will be sitting pretty on top of the division, if Andrada defeats the hot prospect then he continues to be considered the top dog in the division by most.

Pedro Gonzalez vs. Sheldon Gaines
Gonzalez has run through Nick Chasteen and Tim Amorim with his aggressive style. A veteran like Gaines who is used to being in tough gritty fights would be a solid match up for Gonzalez. Lion Fight has a fighter in Gonzalez that comes in and goes for broke each and every round. They can definitely have him turn into a fan favorite because of his fighting style if they give him the right match ups. Gaines is the perfect match up at the moment, a seasoned veteran that has some more experience than Gonzalez’s first two opponents.

Lion Fight Promotions recently announced that Yodsanklai Fairtex would be defending his Lion Fight middleweight world title at Lion Fight 18 in Las Vegas. Despite the announcement Yodsanklai did not have an opponent at the time, until now. The fighter pegged to take on the Thai power house is Salah “The Beast” Khalifa.

The London based Khalifa will be looking to end Yodsanklai’s current 12 fight winning streak while taking his Lion Fight middleweight title in the process. For fans that might not be familiar with Khalifa, he has made his name fighting internationally and is a WMC MAD champion. He fought in the United States in December of 2012 at Muay Thai in America: In Honor of the King. He defeated Justin Greskiewicz by (T)KO with a perfectly timed elbow that sliced open Greskiewicz eye.

Lion Fight 18 will take place on September 5th in Las Vegas, NV at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

This week's Fight of the Week features a classic between Buakaw and Jordan Watson. The pair met in mid 2010 under the MSA Muay Thai Premier League banner. A then 22 year old Jordan Watson was looking to shock the world by defeating Buakaw who was in return looking to bounce back from his extra round decision loss to Andy Souwer in the K-1 Max Tournament the previous year.

Buakaw walked away with a decision, but Watson put on a solid showing not backing down from the experienced Thai. In the third round Buakaw sent Watson down to one knee with a combination of punches to the body and head. Since the fight Watson has gone on to become one of the UK's best talents and Buakaw, well he is in the middle of a 31 fight winning streak and has not tasted defeat in four years. Sit back and enjoy the fight.

Eddie Walker talks upcoming fight with Adrian Miles at NFC 67

Two years ago Eddie “Showtime” Walker was on a tear. Fighting under the Lion Fight Promotions banner he scored a huge upset knockout over Joe Schilling and then followed that up by placing second in the Road to Glory Middleweight Tournament. Despite being the runner up in the tournament he was signed by Glory and was immediately matched up against the Steve Wakeling, one of the best fighters in the world in their weight class. Walker would taste defeat for the second consecutive time and would eventually lose four fights in a row.

Despite the setback Walker continues to press forward looking to bring his entertaining power packed fight style. Returning to fight in his hometown of Atlanta for the first time in over two years, Walker looks to end the losing streak this weekend when he takes on Adrian Miles at NFC 67. Despite taking the bout on short notice, Walker was kind enough to take some time out of his training to answer a few questions about his career, and his upcoming fight.

MTA: You are fighting on short notice against Adrian Miles this Saturday. How has the prep for this fight come along?

Eddie:
The short camp has been great. I have some great people in my life that are willing to sacrifice their own time to help me get prepared when it's time.

MTA:
How familiar are you with Adrian, and what do you think will be the biggest challenge for you this fight?

Eddie: I don't know anything about him really, except for the fact he is a big strong guy and he is left handed. I think the biggest challenge is myself, other than that just looking to have fun in there.

MTA: You have dropped 4 fights in a row. How much is that on your mind coming into this bout?

Eddie: Damn straight to calling me out on that huh? Lol! It's not really. I know what the issues were and I'm satisfied that they are no longer there. It was a rough last half of 2013 and early part of 2014.

MTA: Was there anything affecting you that people might not know about?

Eddie: I have had a ton of things going on at the same time within that period, but right now is probably not the time to dive into all of that.

MTA: As a fighter how do you shake off hitting a skid like you recently did?

Eddie: Family, friends, fans, the willpower to overcome anything that stands in your way. Support is key. Without it, you will drown yourself in doubt and eliminate any potential that you may have.

MTA: How crucial is it for you to win this fight and not lose a fifth fight in a row?

Eddie:
Every fight is crucial, but when you say it like that it sounds like I better go out there and win! Lol!

MTA: At any point in that rough patch did you think about hanging up the gloves?

Eddie: Thought about it quite a few times, but it wasn't because of the losses. This is a very tough sport to compete in at such a high level when you can't dedicate your life to it 24-7. Changes and compromises always have to happen and relationships are built and destroyed so that success can happen in the future.

MTA: Aside from fighting you like to play clash of clans. Are you better at beating people up or raiding villages?

Eddie: Lol! I probably play that game a little too much when I'm relaxing at the house. I'm pretty sure my wife wants to throw my phone away because of it.

MTA: For Eddie Walker fans out there what is your Clash of Clans name and what is your clan name so they can find you?

Eddie: I go by Showtime (obviously) and my clan name is Lettow Legion. I had no clue what the name meant, so my nerdy clan leader had to explain to me it was from Star Wars or something. I still don't understand it. Lol!

MTA: Back to fighting, if you get past Adrian is there anyone you want to fight next? Anyone in the Glory 77kg rankings.

MTA: You are fighting back in Atlanta, how does it feel to be fighting back in front of your home crowd? It feels great actually! I haven't fought in Atlanta in almost 3 years and everyone seems pretty pumped about coming out to the fight. Atlanta is a great city, and I'm looking forward to fighting on this card and hopefully we can talk Glory into coming here as well!

MTA: Any words for your supporters?

Eddie: I just want to thank everyone who has supported me no matter what. Your messages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all other Social Media really means a lot and I'm looking forward to putting on a show for everyone again.

Eddie Walker returned to the ring this past weekend at NFC 67 in Atlanta, GA. Fighting in front of his home town for the first time in nearly three years, Walker ended a four fight losing streak. He defeated Adrian Miles by unanimous decision.

Early on in the fight Walker stalked Miles and it was obvious what the plan of attack for Miles was, leg kicks. Miles fired off quite a few leg kicks early in the first round as a calm and collected Walker stalked him. In the second round Walker got more active and started to let his hands go. Miles was not very keen on exchanging punches with Walker and tried to tie him up whenever Walker moved in. In the third and final round Miles was clearly fatigued and he spent most of the round trying to hug Walker and keep him from opening up. A clash of heads opened up a nice size cut on Walkers head, but despite the doctor taking a look at it the bout went the distance with Walker being awarded the win.

KO of the Week: Liam Harrison vs. Justin Greskiewicz

Liam Harrison made his American debut back in 2011 when he took on Justin Greskiewicz at The Warriors Cup XII. Harrison was the favorite going in the fight and when it was over it was clear why. Greskiewicz held his own with Harrison in the first round and was doing good in the second round, although most likely the judges at that point were scoring the bout for Harrison.

Early in the bout Greskiewicz connected with a quick jumping knee to the midsection of Harrison. As the second round was coming to an end Greskiewicz attempted the knee again, but being the savvy veteran that Harrison is he countered with a perfectly timed left hand that caught Greskiewicz in mid air and sent him crashing to the canvas. It was a worthy effort for Greskiewicz, but Harrison had to much fire power in the end.

Jorina Baars talks upcoming title defense at Lion Fight 18 against Anke Van Gestel

Lion Fight Women’s Welterweight Champion Jorina Baars is set to defend her title against Anke Van Gestel at Lion Fight 18. Here first title defense will have all eyes on her. She defeated Cris Cyborg to win the title and the victory put the world on notice of what kind of damage a world class striker can do against a top MMA striker.

Jorina was kind enough to take some time from her busy schedule to answer a few questions about her upcoming title defense.

MTA: You have a big fight coming up against Anke Van Gestel at Lion Fight 18. How familiar are you with Anke?

Jorina: I know her fight style it’s very similar to mine. She is a technical fighter but I think I'm the hardest of the two.

MTA: This will be your first attempt at defending your Lion Fight title, any pressure after securing your title with a huge win over Cyborg Santos?

Jorina: No for me every fight is a fight between my opponent and me! If I get a title belt after the fight or just a winner’s cup to me it is still just the opponent who is in my way for the win.

MTA: When you defeated Cyborg the general consensus by MMA fans who weren't familiar with Muay Thai was that she was the best female striker. Obviously you proved that to not be the case. How big was that win for you?

Jorina: Yes it was a big win. Cris is one of the most dangerous women on earth. Her fights are always aggressive and with a lot of power. I like to see her fighting style.

MTA: Do you change your game plan from fight to fight depending on your opponent or do you typically just focus on yourself and what you will bring rather than your opponent?

Jorina: I just focus on my style. Off course I'm looking for some video on the Internet but every fight is different so I fight my own style.

MTA: How do you like fighting in Las Vegas, and as soon as the fight is over what is your victory meal of choice?

Jorina: I love to fight in Vegas!!!! I feel like a superstar when I'm there! Hihi Hihi my victory meal I think a big burger with cheese!!!

MTA: Not looking past Anke, but if you could fight anyone after this fight who would you want to fight and why?

Jorina: I fight everyone I don't choose opponents. So I hope Lion Fight keeps finding good strong opponent for me as always.

MTA: Can we get a prediction for your fight with Anke?

Jorina: I think a technical fight with a lot of nice Muay Thai skills and I will try to give the fans a KO as surprise ;)

MTA: Thanks for the time Jorina, any word for your fans and supporters?

Jorina: Thank you! Without fans I'm nobody! So thanks for the support and come to see and meet me in Vegas !!!!!

Fight of the Week: Steve Wakeling vs. Artem Levin

Steve Wakeling and Artem Levin's controversial fight at Xplosion Fight Series takes Fight of the Week honors this week. The bout between two of the world's best light heavyweights had fans buzzing a little over two years ago when it went down in England. The fight did not disappoint as the pair went toe to toe for five rounds. When it was over many thought that Wakeling had done enough to dethrone Levin from the top of the division as well as end his current 26 fight winning streak.

When the judges announced their decision it was declared a draw and fans in attendance were upset. Many thought Wakeling that done more with his kick heavy attack to take the decision. Despite what the result may have been it was a very close fight and the best way to solve this highly disputed decision would be to have the pair rematch. We would expect a rematch to be just as good as the first fight between these two heavy hitters. In case you haven't seen their first fight sit back and enjoy it.
