Challenger 10: Night of Pain Results

There was some great Muay Thai action taking place in Canada this past weekend. Challenger 10: Night of Pain took place in Calgary and featured a main event bout between Canadian young gun Hakeem Dawodu and Thailand's Sam Samut. Stepping into the ring Dawodu had a 7-0 as a pro and when he walked out he was 8-0. The fight with Samut went the distance, but Dawodu was in complete control from the beginning. He was elusive in the ring and countered well, he was also able to open a decent cut on the forehead of Samut. As the fight wore on it became more evident that a finish would be needed for Samut to win and as he got more aggressive searching for a knockout, Dawodu was more than happy to continue to fire back strikes and engage with him. In the end the unanimous decision in favor Dawodu was an easy decision for the judges.

In the night's co-main event Mark MacKinnon of Canada and Jason Caldwell of the United states fought for roughly 20 seconds before there bout came to and end. Both men came out aggressively and as Caldwell pushed forward with strikes a well place counter elbow by MacKinnon turned his lights out. It was an exciting finish to a short and explosive fight.

Results:
Hakeem Dawodu def. Sam Samut via Unanimous Decision
Mark MacKinnon def. Jason Caldwell via KO in Rd. 1
Brian Burns def. Phil Leier via Split Decision
Andrew Vandervelden def. Dwain Soon via (T)KO in Rd. 2

Friday Night Fights will once again take place at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York, NY. The May 16th event will feature a headlining bout that will pit Jose Palacios against Justin Greskiewicz. Both Greskiewicz and Palacios are some of North America's most respected fighters.

Greskiewicz will try to shake of a razor thin decision loss to Chris Kwiatkowski in his previous Friday Night Fights appearance. Palacios will also be looking to get back on the winning track after having dropped decisions in his last two outings.

In the night's co-main event Villi Bello will look to make it three consecutive wins when he takes on Eddie Martinez. Both fighters have shown they have exciting styles and Martinez has recently been featured on several Yokkao shows against international talent. It should prove to be an exciting fight between both of these fighters as neither seem to hold anything back in the ring.

Glory 15 Results and Recap

Glory 15 took place earlier today in Istanbul, Turkey and fans were excited for the Glory Light Heavyweight Tournament. Tyrone Spong, Gokhan Saki, and Nathan Corbett were the big draws with Saulo Cavalari looking to cement his name among the best fighters in the world.

The semi-final bouts saw Spong and Cavalari fight three hard rounds. Spong was awarded the decision win, but Cavalari showed the world he was not someone to be taken lightly. The other semi-final bout came to a shocking end when Gokhan Saki scored a (T)KO over Nathan Corbett in the first round. A big left hook from Saki connected and Corbett was soon covered in blood from his ear.

The final of the tournament unfortunately was not what fans were looking for. Before things could heat up between Saki and Spong a gruesome injury took place. Spong threw a low kick which Saki lifted his leg to check and Spong’s leg snapped and he fell backwards to the canvas. With the injury Saki won the Light Heavyweight Tournament and was crowned the Glory Light Heavyweight Champion.

In other action on the night Robin van Roosmalen and Marat Grigorian fought a hard close fight that went to van Roosmalen although a case could be made that Grigorian should have gotten the win. Danyo Ilunga also scored a big knockout over Romanian Andrei Stoica in the first round of their bout. A counter right from Ilunga dropped Stoica who in return could not answer the referee’s count. A solid win for Ilunga against a name like Stoica.

Updated Light Heavyweight Rankings 4-13-2014

$

Simon Marcuscontinues to sit on top of the Light Heavyweight Rankings as he has for the past two years. Joe Schilling is no longer in the number two slot as he has been bumped up to the Cruiserweight Rankings after competing in Glory’s 187lb Middleweight division.

Stephen Richards comes back into the rankings after a lengthy absence due to inactivity and replaces Schilling. Robert Thomas enters the rankings for the first time, and both Alex Berrios and Andrew Kapel move down one spot each due to their recent two fight skids.

1. Simon Marcus (39-0-1)
Simon Marcus has all but cemented himself into the number one slot for the 175lb rankings. The only mark on his record that is not a win is a controversial draw with Chidi Njokuani in September of 2013. In 2014 he is already 3-0 including a hard fought decision win over recent Glory signee Israel Adesanya and a knockout of Vehas TopKing. There are a slew of interesting fights for Marcus including a potential re-match with Artem Levin, but the bout that would get everyone excited would be the UK’s Steve Wakeling. If it will happen only time will tell, but right now Marcus sits perched on top of the Light Heavyweight Rankings and it doesn’t seem he will be coming down anytime soon. He is expected to compete for Glory in their upcoming Glory Middleweight Tournament and it will be interesting how losing some of his best weapons (clinch and elbows) and moving back up to 187lbs will affect Marcus.

2. Stephen Richards (8-2-1)
Stephen Richard has been one of North America’s best kept Muay Thai secrets for quite some time now. He is well rounded and full of grit, the problem is fight fans don’t get to see him fight very often. 2013 was his most active year in recent memory and he only had two fights that year. He defeated Alex Berrios and Glen Spencer, both by decision. If Richards can remain more active in 2014 and for the remainder of his career Muay Thai fans will definitely be well aware of who he is.

3. Robert Thomas (6-0)
Thomas has scored some big wins in the past few months. He bested Andrew Kapel by unanimous decision at Round Kick Rumble XXI. He most recently scored a (T)KO victory over Tarek Rached in New York at Friday Night Fights. The Mas Thai Boxing product is only 20 years old and like many of his Canadian counter parts that have climbed to the top of the North American scene it seems like the sky is the limit for him.

4. Alex Berrios (9-4)
Alex Berrios is known as one of North America’s best technicians. He has been in the ring with some of North America’s top fighters and has always shown to be a worthy opponent. In addition to his excellent technique, Berrios has shown he possesses fight ending power in his strikes which makes him that much more exciting to watch. Berrios has recently hit a two fight skid, the first time this has ever happened in his career. Both of his losses were by decision to solid opponents in Stephen Richards and Brett Hlavacek. Berrios doesn’t have a return date to the ring yet, but when he does there is no doubt that he will be ready to step in against whoever is placed in front of him.

5. Andrew Kapel (10-5)
Kapel is another one of North America’s talents that would be more widely recognized if he was able to stay more active. The Minnesota based fighter has dropped his last two bouts. The first was in the semi-finals of the Road to Glory tournament last year in an extra round decision and most recently at Round Kick Rumble XXI where he lost a unanimous decision to Robert Thomas.

Rankings qualification - Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts are all taken into consideration for the rankings. These rankings are not only based on Muay Thai Fights as many fighters compete in both full rules Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts. Fighters are not to be inactive for any period longer than 12 months or they will be dropped from the rankings unless a fight is schedule within a month from the date they become ineligible. Fighters that compete in two weight classes will be assigned a weight class that they compete in regularly or hold a major title in. Fighters that are born outside North America, become eligible once they have permanently resided in North America for two years and are actively fighting on the North American fight circuit.

*If you are currently ranked in a weight class and would like to switch weight classes please notify Rankings@MuayThaiAuthority.com. Switching weight classes does not guarantee you will be ranked in the new weight class.

Fans have been asking for quite some time when they will see Canadian powerhouse Simon Marcus on the Glory stage. It was confirmed this past weekend that he will compete in the upcoming Glory Middleweight tournament in Los Angeles, CA at Glory 17. Glory has now officially announced the signing of Marcus.

Marcus has risen to prominence not only in North America but the world as one of the best light heavyweights. Marcus will be competing in the 187lb tournament for Glory, a weight he has not fought at in over two years since his tenure with the MPL (Muaythai Premier League).

Marcus brings and impressive 39-0-1 record as he signs with Glory, although most of his bouts have been under full rules Muay Thai. It will be interesting how Marcus adjust to not being able to use two of his best weapons in the ring, his clinch and elbows.

Sittichai Sitsongpeenong has recently taken to the international circuit to continue to build upon the reputation he had already established for himself in Thailand.  Fighting out of the Sitsongpeenong Muay Thai Camp, seven of his last ten fights have been outside of Thailand and he is 9-1 in those ten fights. The lone loss was a split decision to Enriko Gogokhia in Italy. Those nine victories include wins over the likes of Jordan Watson, Kym Johnson, and Mohamed Khamal.

The victory over Khamal was his most recent, as he out pointed the Moroccan-Dutch fighter at Legend III in Italy. We were able to catch up with Sittichai and ask him a few questions about the fight and his career.

MTA: Did the fight go as you had planned, or were there things you have wanted to do differently?

Sittichai: Yes and no! I expected to win but I fought better than I thought I would and exceeded my expectations.

MTA: How do you like fighting in Italy?

Sittichai: Fighting in Italy is good but it is hard to find food I like (Thai Food) it Italy.

MTA: You have a great resume as a fighter, what fight would interest you most and why?

Sittichai: I would like to have a re-match with Enrike Gogokhiya. I thought I won that fight but received a bad decision by the Italian judges. This is my only loss in my past 25 fights and it should never have been a loss.

MTA: Most Thai fighters start at a young age, how old were you when you started and why?

Sittichai: I started Muaythai at the age of 11 because I was interested in the sport and my father wanted me to be a boxer. I also wanted to make money for my family.

MTA: What advice can you give to young fighters that can help develop their skills and career?

Sittichai: Find the right camp/gym, find the right trainer/teacher and train hard. Fight as often as possible and against good opponents.

MTA: What would you like to do when your fight career is over?

Sittichai: I haven't thought about it yet.

MTA: What is your favorite memory since you started fighting? (Example favorite fight)

Sittichai: The last fight I just won against Mohamed Khamal at Oktagon + Legend in Milan.

MTA: When can fight fans expect to see you in action again?

Sittichai: My next fight is scheduled for May in Thailand and then I have a fight on Best of Siam 5 in Paris, France.

Glory 16 took place last night in Denver, CO and featured a 4-man heavyweight contender tournament as well as the Glory Welterweight Championship title fight. Fighting for the welterweight title were Marc De Bonte and Karapet Karapetyan. Unlike most Glory fights the title bout was five rounds and when it was all over De Bonte was standing a top of the welterweight division as the new champion after taking home a close split decision. De Bonte was originally set to face Nieky Holzken for the title, but Holzken was forced to withdraw from the bout. We can most likely expect to see De Bonte’s first title defense be against Holzken.

In the 4-man heavyweight tournament Errol Zimmerman proved to be too much for the opposition as he scored (T)KO’s over both the men he faced on the night. In the tournament semi-finals he made quick work of Australian Ben Edwards and in the tournament final he stopped Anderson Silva. The tournament win is a nice way for Zimmerman to throw his name back in the mix for title contention after having suffered a KO loss to Daniel Ghita at Glory 13.

Pat Barry made his Glory debut on the night and boy was it exciting, although not in favor of Barry. Zack Mwekassa welcomed Barry to the Glory ring with heavy punches and scored a monstrous KO in the first round. First Mwekassa hurt Barry on the feet forcing the former UFC fighter to take a knee, when the fight resumed Mwekassa was on the attack and a vicious left uppercut flattened Barry out. It was a brutal knockout and nice win for Zack Mwekassa.

Some big fights also took place on the undercard, Raymond Daniels scored a highlight reel knockout of Francois Ambgang with a spinning heel kick and Artem Levin scored a decision victory over young Canadian Robert Thomas.

Time to Throw Away Your Traditional Steel Muay Thai Cup and Upgrade to The Worlds Best Groin Protection  - Diamond MMA

Im sure you are all familiar with the traditional Muay Thai Steel Cup. Maybe these worked in the 1900’s but now these cups are outdated. They are heavy, uncomfortable, chaff your legs, ride up your butt like a g-string and don't offer the protection fighters need in the ring!

The sports of Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts have evolved and so should your gear. Diamond MMA has entered the business to change the game! Craig, the founder of Diamond MMA was frustrated with constantly seeing fighter after fighter going down from groin shots. Ever since then, Craig has been on a mission and has not slowed down. Craig has put together a great team of all former high-impact sport athletes. Together, they designed the only groin protection in the business which takes your “nuts out of the equation.”

Don't believe us? Joe Rogan UFC commentator says “It took my balls out of the equation.

And he is not the only one. Now Diamond is used by over 50% of the UFC fighters, hundreds of Muay Thai fighters, NFL, NHL, MLB players and many more. The best fighters in the business are demanding Diamond left and right. Anthony Pettis, Cain Valasquez, Chael Sonnen, Pat Barry are just a few of the hundreds of pros that demand Diamond. Check out the full team here:

Sean Fagan better known to many around the Muay Thai world as the Muay Thai Guy has taken his love for Muay Thai and turned it into his life. Sean is currently one of America’s top amateur fighters and also a valued resource in the Muay Thai community. Sean is the creator of www.muay-thai-guy.com, one of the webs best Muay Thai related websites. Sean provides great insight into training, eating, and more for beginners to experienced fighters.

Sean recently moved to Thailand and we were lucky enough to catch up with him and speak about his fight career, his website, and his future plans. Make sure to also check out the official Muay Thai Guy You Tube page here.

MTA: How did you get involved in Muay Thai?

Sean: I originally played hockey back when I was younger and always found myself trying to get in scrums and fights. One day my mom jokingly said that I should box instead of trying to find fights on the ice all the time… so I did. After boxing I tried MMA, then after MMA I found that my love and calling was Muay Thai.

MTA: What made you start Muay Thai Guy and how do you like being a valued resource for your readers around the world?

Sean: At first it was just a way to hold myself accountable and keep track of my training. I figured if people were following my training camps that I would be more likely to stick with it. After getting asked by followers to write about certain topics to give some tips, the blog just continually grew until it became what it is now. The fact that I get emails and messages everyday about how it’s helped other Nak Muay with their training in one way or another is unreal. It’s a surreal feeling, knowing that I’ve been a part of other peoples fight camps and training sessions. I hope to continue growing the site and help the sport grow!

MTA: You just moved to Thailand, what prompted the move?

Sean: A few things. Initially my girlfriend Liz and I were planning on living in NYC for a couple years and then go to Thailand after she finished her degree. We didn’t enjoy the city as much as we thought and she actually missed the sign ups for classes, so we decided to make the move earlier than expected. We had a bunch of reasons for coming over to Thailand. Obviously I wanted to train Muay Thai and get more ring experience, but I also wanted to do some traveling around the country too. We also want to do some volunteer work and experience more of the traditional Thai way of living since a majority of places to train are very westernized. Other than that, Liz is getting more and more into yoga and there are some great yoga schools out here too, so we figured that we can both pursue our passions while learning more about ourselves along the way. And lastly, we wanted a change of pace. The city was a bit hectic and now we want to kind of sit back and relax a little more to reflect and figure out what we want to do with our lives.

MTA: You recently won in Thailand is that your official pro debut and how was the feeling of getting back in the ring after some time off?

Sean: No I wouldn’t call it my pro debut. I’ve had 4 other fights here in Thailand as well, but if I were to come back and fight pro in the states at that time, I would’ve gotten my ass handed to me. But the fight wasn’t a challenge at all and it was a bit of a mismatch, but what can you do? It was nice to get some ring rust off though, so no complaints there.

MTA: What is your best Muay Thai memory?

Sean: It’s hard to choose just one, but I would say winning my first amateur title at Madison Square Garden with a 5th round TKO of a tough opponent in Joey Hernandez. Not only was it a rematch, but it was a packed crowd at a legendary venue. I felt that I fought really well and getting that belt strapped around my waist gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. Not to mention I had all my friends, family and co-workers there cheering me on, so seeing them after the fight was awesome too.

MTA: What is your worst Muay Thai memory?

Sean: Back in August I was fighting Chris Williams for the WKA US amateur title when he broke my arm after I went to block a head kick. The fight itself wasn’t my worst memory though. I was proud of myself for being able to continue fighting through 4 more rounds with a broken arm and get the close decision win, but it’s the aftermath that was pretty difficult to deal with. Going through surgery, taking time off, and not having much purpose for my day-to-day life was a bit demoralizing. But I was able to learn to take the good with the bad while reflecting on my life, my career and the direction I wanted to go with both.

MTA: What is your dream fight and why?

Sean: I’d love to eventually fight Kevin Ross. I know fighting him would bring out the best in me and challenge me to push myself as hard as possible. He is also a fighter I really look up to. To be able to share the ring with him would be an honor and I’m sure we’d put on an awesome fight for the fans!

MTA: Who is your favorite Muay Thai fighter and why?

Sean: Kevin Ross is definitely one of them because of his aggressive fighting style and the influence he’s had on the Muay Thai scene here in America. Other than Kevin, I love watching Pornsanae Sitmonchai throw down. The dude is a beast and will keep coming forward no matter what!

MTA: How long do you plan on staying in Thailand, and are you planning on training at a few different gyms?

Sean: We plan on staying here until the end of 2014, but it could easily change depending on our mindsets. Who knows, we could be here longer or we could come home earlier, it’s just a go with the flow kind of thing right now. And yes I plan on training at a handful of gyms, but I also don’t want to stretch myself thin trying to train at too many. We have a few gyms we’ve researched and plan on training at, and we’ll probably stick to one or two at each area of Thailand we hit.

MTA: What is your ultimate goal in Muay Thai?

Sean: I’m constantly asking myself the same question and it’s hard to put my finger on it. One day I want to be a top professional fighter who fights on top promotions like Lion Fight, GLORY or Yokkao, then the next day I want to open up a gym, take some time off from fighting and focus on building a life with my girlfriend. That being said, I know that Muay Thai will always be a part of my life and I know that I will always want to help other people along the way. So I guess my ultimate goal would be to continue being the best fighter I can be while spreading the word of this awesome sport and inspiring people along the way! I’d like to give a shout out to a few people if you don’t mind. First and foremost I’d like to thank my family, especially my mom and dad who have been 100% supportive of my choices in life and who have been there for me emotionally and financially when things are tough. I’d also like to thank my girlfriend Liz for being my backbone and helping me through the good times and the bad. And finally I’d like to thank all my trainers, training partners, fans, followers and haters who have helped bring out the best in me and make me who I am today. Thank you all!
